The manual transmission is becoming a thing of the past.

Fewer and fewer Americans know how to operate a stick shift. As few as 18% of Americans can operate a stick and a lot of it has to do with the advancements in automatic transmissions.

Automatic transmissions and fuel economy go hand in hand and there;s only about 5% of vehicles being sold in the U.S. that come with a stick shift. In 1987 that percentage was 25%.
