Jim Beam Inc., the makers of Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark, have been sold to a Japanese firm for $13.63 billion. The Japanese company, Suntory Holding Ltd., is the same that bought Anheuser-Busch and Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo.

With the acquisition, Suntory becomes the third largest global premium spirits business. When the announcement was made of the sale Jim Beam stock shot up 24%. The reason for the purchase is explained by the continued growth is sales for bourbon whiskey made in the U.S.A. It is growing both domestically and abroad.
