Growing up in Pittsburgh the Steelers were my team, still are in fact. Art Rooney not only founded the Pittsburgh Steeler but was one of the founding members of the NFL. After Art’s death his son Dan Rooney took over operation of the team and became one of the most powerful and popular owners in the NFL.

Art Rooney, 84, died on Thursday Dan Rooney took over football operations in the 1960’s after his farther Art passed away. After taking over the team the Steelers went on to win 6 Super Bowls after never having played for a league title.

Rooney may best be remembered for the ‘Rooney Rule’ where NFL teams are required to interview minority candidates for coaching and front office positions.

The Sun Journal points out that Rooney was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 joining his farther Art.
