'Macbeth' is one of William Shakespeare's greatest plays and one of the most inherently cinematic stories ever written. That's why it's been made into a movie multiple times before. That's why a version starring Michael Fassbender is currently in the works. But this is a first: Sean Bean is attached to lead an adaptation of the infamous "Scottish play" for actor-turned-director Vincent Regan ... but only if the project reaches its Kickstarter goal.

Titled 'Enemy of Man,' the film adaptation will feature Bean as Macbeth and Charlotte Gainsbourg ('Nymphomaniac') as Lady Macbeth, the medieval couple whose descent into madness and murder is one of the most chilling tales ever concocted. And Bean isn't alone in the ensemble: James D'Arcy ('Jupiter Ascending'), Charles Dance ('Game of Thrones'), Rupert Grint ('Harry Potter') and Jason Flemying ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button') are all on board.

Although the production hasn't officially begun yet (hence the Kickstarter), the cast and crew shot a "concept trailer" that gives viewers a taste of what the finished film will look and feel like, in addition to an eight-minute short film titled 'The Instruments of Darkness.' The footage is visually striking for what's surely a low-budget attempt and it gives us hope that, if funded, 'Enemy of Man' could be something really cool.

But (and it's a big "but") it's got to meet its goal and it's not even close yet. If the trailer isn't enough to sell you on the film, here's an excerpt from the pitch on the Kickstarter page:

'The Enemy Of Man' will have a unique cinematic quality, stripping back the dialogue and cranking up the action. It traverses a bleak, frozen landscape of shattered castles and pillaged towns, rendering the interior world that clouds Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s addled minds, as they sink deeper into their heart of darkness. A timeless masterpiece of war, ambition, betrayal, murder and ultimately, revenge.
