‘Machete Kills’ in Danger of Being Killed?

Open Road Films

Danny Trejo’s Machete is rarely — if ever — squaring off against a foe he can’t handle, but that has changed with a lawsuit that has put the badass in danger of being shut down.

Overnight Productions, which produced the original ‘Machete’ as well as the sequel ‘Machete Kills,’ is looking to cut ties with Robert Rodriguez, director of both pictures, and is seeking $2 million in damages for various alleged wrongdoings. And this could well see ‘Machete Kills’ shelved for the foreseeable future.

We’re not ones to tangle you up in legal mumbo-jumbo, so let’s cut to the gist: As Deadline reports, Overnight Productions alleges they were not provided with the appropriate Texas tax credit information as required under the agreement with Rodriguez’s company. In addition to that, Overnight CEO Rich Schwartz claims Rodriguez and his company have “failed and refused to provide the required budget information” to his company in order to determine their producer’s fee.

All of this is to say that if Schwartz wins the case, the rights to the sequel will revert to Overnight Productions, spelling serious trouble for the film’s release. (Open Road Films purchased the rights last month.)

‘Machete Kills,’ currently slated for a Spring 2013 release, stars Trejo, Jessica Alba, Sofia Vergara, Alexa Vega, Cuba Gooding Jr., Amber Heard, William Sadler, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga and Mel Gibson. We shouldn’t be denied access to this cast; let’s resolve this dispute, gentlemen!
