Maine gas prices dropped almost 12 cents per gallon in just this past week and are averaging $1.18 a gallon less than one year ago. According to the price-monitoring website GasBuddy.com, the average for a gallon of gas in Maine is at $2.35 per gallon.

That is good news for motorists, however Maine's average is still higher than the national average of $2.19 per gallon. In fact, GasBuddy.com reports that nearly 40% of the gas stations across the country are at or below $2 per gallon.

Prices are expected to go higher by spring, when refineries must make a cleaner-burning summer blend.

The lowest gas price in Maine was reported in Bangor at $2.13 per gallon.

Meanwhile a barrel of crude oil is under $50 for the first time since 2009. The price closed at $49.95 on Monday.
