Ranking last on a list is usually bad, but this time Mainers will welcome ranking 51st out of 51, when it comes to having the least expensive car insurance rates in the country. Insure.com compiled a list of the most expensive states, including Washington D.C., with the most expensive car insurance rates.Maine came in with the lowest annual average premium of $934 according to the survey. Louisiana had the highest rates with an average annual premium of $2,699!

The survey collected car insurance quotes for 750 car models from six of the largest insurance carriers, Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive and State Farm, in 10 zip codes per state. Quotes were for a single, 40-year-old male driver with good credit and a clean driving record that commutes 12 miles to work each day.

The survey also broke down which cars cost the least and most to insure in Maine. The lowest cost was for a Honda Odyssey LX, which had an average annual premium in Maine of $704. The most expensive car to insure in Maine is a Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG, with an annual premium of $2.010.

Maine had the lowest rates last year as well at $889 for an average annual premium and Maine has been in the lowest 10 of the list since 2010.
