The 38th annual Maine Highland Games and Scottish Festival is coming to the Topsham Fairgrounds. This year’s event will run August 19th and 20th featuring music, dancing and athletic events.

 

Friday the 19th will open at 7pm with the ‘Gathering of the Clans Cellidh’ featuring a bonfire, storytelling, dancing, camp stew and more. Admission for Friday is free but donations are welcome.

Saturday the 20th sees the gates open at 8am with many events starting at 8:30 and ‘Opening Ceremonies’ will begin at 10. The opening includes the ‘Massed Pipe Bands' and ‘Parade of the Clans’.There will be plenty of Scottish food like haggis a savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck (heart, liver and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach but nowadays often in an artificial casing & sausage. Fine Scottish whiskey will also be on hand along with a beer tent.

Athletic games will include: ‘Open Stone’, ‘Braemar Stone Put’, 'Heavy and Light Weight for Distance’, ‘Heavy Hammer’, ‘Caber Toss’ and ‘Sheaf Toss’.
