After spending three months alone in the wilderness, 6,000 miles from his off-the-grid homestead, Zachary Fowler of Appleton has been declared the winner of the third season of History Channel’s survival show ‘Alone.’

For his effort he won the grand prize of $500,000. He has been back in Maine since August but has been sworn to secrecy since the end of filming.

Fowler spent 87 days alone in the wilds of South America with his only contact being an occasional visit from a medical staff. At one point Fowler was worried the medical staff would eliminate him from the competition because he had lost 70 pounds. He knew he won the competition when his wife, who he hadn’t seen or spoken to in more than three months, snuck up and grabbed him from behind.
