The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife estimates that Maine has 76,000 moose. The annual Maine moose permit lottery on Saturday will produce a record 4,110 permits.Moose hunting season in Maine runs from September until November.

Hunting in Maine has a big effect on the Maine economy. In 2012, according to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, that hunting in general, including moose hunting, generated $1.4 billion.

The number of hunting licenses sold in Maine in 2012 totaled 209,990, that's up from 203,638 in 2011.

According to figures provided by the Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Director of Licensing Bill Swan, residents paid $527,045 in 2012 just to take part in the moose lottery. Then, when a Maine resident is selected in the moose lottery, they still have to buy a $52 moose permit.

The odds of a Maine resident getting selected in the moose lottery this year with only a single chance in the lottery is 1.9%.

Winners selected in the moose lottery will be posted will be posted this Saturday at 8 p.m. on the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website.
