Firearms season begins Saturday for Maine residents and Monday for nonresidents.

This year 28,770 any-deer permits were issued, according to a news release Thursday from the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. That number is down from 37,185 any-deer permits last year, according to the department.

Deer hunting has grown in popularity in Maine, and the number of resident hunting licenses has increased each year since 2005.

Last year, there were 224,039 licensed hunters in the state, and the department estimates that more than 160,000 licensed hunters hunt deer.
