Maine’s New Hockey Team Has It’s Name

Portland’s new hockey team will take the name of the hockey team that played in the city from 1977 to 1992 in the American Hockey League.

According to pressherald.com the announcement was made at the Boys and Girls Club of Portland on Friday afternoon. The team will be known as the Portland Mariners and will begin play in the ECHL league in October 2018.

The name was picked over four other finalists from a contest that received over 18,000 votes. Mariners took the most votes but not far behind were the name Wild Blueberries. Watchman, Puffins and Lumberjacks rounded out the top five.
