According to the Mayan calendar the end of the world will be December 20, 2012, a date not too far away. It is understandable how this myth started but the fact is the Mayan calendar does not predict the end of the world. The calendar responsible for the end of the world myth is the Mayan long count calendar which interlocks with other calendars.  The Mayans didn’t have just one calendar; they had calendars, so when one stopped another started.

The Mayan calendar says we’re living in the fourth world or ‘creation’ as the last or ‘third world’ ended on the long count calendar  12.19.19.19.17.19 and the sequence will come around again December 20. 2012. You can see how the myth came about just by looking at the dates, but it simply means one calendar will end and another will begin. We have a New Year every December 31st and the world is still here. It is the same with the Mayan creation periods. The end of the cycle means you’ve reached the end of the creation cycle like we reach the end of a year. It’s a time for celebration not the end of the world. (I hope!)
