Mother Behind Inspiration for ‘Ronan’ Praises Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is raising money for cancer research with her single, 'Ronan,' which she premiered on the Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon. The tearjerking song was inspired by a blog written by Maya Thompson, mother to Ronan Thompson, who passed away at four years old following a battle with neuroblastoma. Maya Thompson was incredibly moved by Swift's gesture and is speaking out about how the song came to fruition.

Swift had been following Thompson's blog and met her at a concert in Phoenix. "When we met in Phoenix she had tears streaming down her cheeks when she told me how sorry she was that Ronan passed away. She said she'd been reading our story and said she was so inspired by the love I had for Ronan," Maya told MTV. "I had a moment when I thought, 'This girl's too good to be true.' But she's not. What you see is what you get. She's that kind-hearted."

The song was a surprise to Thompson, but a welcome one. "She called me a week before to tell me about the song," Thompson revealed. "I was very surprised, to say the least. I heard it for the first time the night it was on TV."

Thompson's co-writing credit on the track was well deserved. "It's pretty much the words from my blog," Maya explained of Swift's lyrics. "Listening to it was very emotional and I was blown away by how she got it. She got it in a way that most people don't," she said. "She took the time to take the intimate parts of things I'd written and put them into the song." The lyrics, which seriously made us cry less than 30 seconds in, begin, "I remember your bare feet down the hallway / I remember your little laugh / Race cars on the kitchen floor / Plastic dinosaurs, I love you to the moon and back," followed by the moving chorus, "Come on baby with me / We're gonna fly away from here / You were my best four years."

Obviously Thompson felt just as touched by the song, if not more so. "It was very emotional. It's hard to hear, but she did it in such a beautiful way and it touched so many people," Maya said. "She got it right to a T. She really took the time to go through each thing I've written and she got it 100 percent right."
