The president of the Greater Bangor Area NAACP has formally asked Skowhegan High School officials to stop using the school nickname of Indians and the image of the mascot.

Several other Maine high schools, including Wiscasset and Sanford, have dropped Indian-themed mascots over the past few years.

Superintendent Brent Colbry and Principal Monique Poulin told the Morning Sentinel that changing the nickname is really a community decision.
