Today is National Poultry Day, a day to celebrate the chicken. Poultry comes from the Latin word ‘Pullus’, which means small animal.

Chicken wings have become the most popular way to eat chicken, surpassing any other form of chicken eating in the world. Poultry is not the most popular meat in the world though; it comes in second behind pork. Pork accounts for 38% of meat eaten in the world while poultry is 30%.

Chickens are believed to be direct decedents of dinosaurs. In 2007, protein was extracted from a 68 million year old T-Rex bone and the DNA protein was identical to a chicken.

There are more chickens in the world than humans by about a 3 to 1 margin.

Chickens: 20 to 25 million.

Humans: 7 million.
