With New Year’s resolutions coming up in a few days here are a few facts about this yearly attempt to start the New Year on a better course. Regardless of the year, each year there are the resolutions at the top of list, like lose weight, quit smoking, get organized, spend less and save more, exercise, and help others.

All those resolutions are admirable goals to try and obtain and a big ‘thumbs up’ to those that do achieve their goals. Unfortunately, the odds are against you. But knowing that going in may help you achieve your New Year’s resolutions.

About 45% of Americans make a resolution for the New Year while 38% never make one and 17% do once in a while. The success rate of those that make ‘the promise’ is only about 8% while 49% are ‘somewhat’ successful. The good news is only 24% of those that make a resolution are ‘never’ successful.

This year more people will make the goal of self-improvement or education than losing weight. Those will be followed by money resolutions and relationship resolutions.

The younger you are the more success you have keeping your resolution, people in their 20’s succeed over people in their 50‘s almost three to one. Despite the stats, experts say it is still a good idea to try and if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
