A New Zealand Kiwi economist, Gareth Morgan, has a campaign to rid the country of cats. The ‘Kiwi’ in his title refers to the endangered flightless bird native to New Zealand. He says cats are natural predators and are killing too many rare birds of a nation once thriving with a large bird population. His theme is ‘make your current cat, your last cat.’. Cats are not native to New Zealand but nearly half of all households own one putting the number at 1.4 million. The Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says,  "Tell Gareth to butt out of our lives, the companionship a cat can provide a family is invaluable.". As for the rest of the cat loving population of the country, they don’t seem interested at all.
