NewPage Mill In Rumford Laying Off Workers

NewPage announced yesterday that it would shut down a paper machine at the mill in Rumford in mid-February due to tough economic times. The mill employees 830 people and about 120 workers are expected to be laid off.Mill spokesman Anthony Lyons said employees were informed Tuesday morning of the shutdown of the mill’s number 12 paper machine, that manufactures coated paper used in magazines and catalogs.

Lyons added that the majority of workers that will be laid off will be hourly workers and will most likely be last in, first out.
