Oxford Online Adds Ridic New Words to Dictionary

New Dictionary Words

Thank the merciful heavens! Now we can say “micropig” as much as we want without having to endure the crushing shame of using a word that isn’t a legitimate word. Micropig is just one of dozens of terms that became official as part of ODO’s most recent quarterly update of new words and definitions, which includes “soul patch,” “hosepipe ban” and “vajazzle.” Finally! Our Thursday night dinner conversation is legit! These and words like “hot yoga,” “brah,” “group yoga,” “tweeps” and “lifecasting” are just a few more of the alarmingly douchey new words. Fortunately, “douche” has gotten itself a new definition too, so we can legitimately describe to you just how douchey it is that people are saying “hackathon” often enough that it has earned a place in the dictionary.

Here are some of the new words with their definitions:

douche (noun): an obnoxious or contemptible person, typically a man
hackathon (noun): an event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming
lolz (plural noun): fun, laughter or amusement
micropig (noun): a pig of a very small, docile, hairless variety, sometimes kept as a pet
mwhahaha (also “muahahaha,” “muwahahaha,” “buahahaha”): used to represent laughter, especially manic or cackling laughter such as that uttered by a villainous character in a cartoon or comic strip
photobomb (verb): spoil a photograph of (a person or thing) by suddenly appearing in the camera’s field of view as the picture is taken, typically as a prank or practical joke
vajazzle (verb; “vagazzling” is the noun): adorn the pubic area of (a woman) with crystals, glitter or other decoration

You’ve only got three months to incorporate these words into your lexicon before more are added, so you better get used to the fact that “lolz” is no longer a “guilty pleasure,” and stop wincing every time you overhear somebody say it in public.
