I was saddened to see that the elementary school that I attended was being torn down. Pettingill Elementary School in Lewiston is being demolished after over 80 years of service.

The school was built in 1926 and additions were built in 1957 and 1960.

I grew up on Pettingill Street in Lewiston. The school was actually on College Avenue. I went there from kindergarten through fifth grade, from 1970 to 1974.

I still remember all of the teachers I had there, from Ms. Miller in Kindergarten, Miss Dubuc, my school teacher crush in the first grade. I actually remember bringing her apples! There was Mrs. Rupert in second grade, Ms.Vega in third grade, Ms.Brann in fourth grade and Mr.Persikis in fifth grade.

I remember in third grade playing the state capitol game, I remember the awesome playground the school had and recess, where we played tag and dodgeball!

Chabot's Construction of Greene will begin taking down the building today and it should take three weeks to complete the job.

Friends of Pettingill is dedicated to preserving the school's playground and making a community park on site.

I'd love to hear some of your elementary school memories!
