Maine Rep. Chellie Pingree is among a group of members of the U.S. House of Representatives that is calling for the federal government to redefine broadband Internet connections to better serve rural areas.

Pingree, a Democrat, and 28 other representatives want the government to increase the threshold for the Community Connect Grant Program.

They say the change would make more communities eligible for help through the Rural Utilities service if their current available Internet service doesn't meet minimum speed requirements.

The bipartisan group of representatives sent a letter asking for the change to federal Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. (AP)
