Police in Auburn are investigating a fatal accident that occurred in the Walmart parking lot early this morning (Oct. 23).According to information on the Auburn Police Department's Facebook page, at about 1:10 am, police responded to the scene of the accident on Mount Auburn Avenue where a woman, identified as Kassandra Lavoie, 33, of Mechanic Falls, was hit by a tractor-trailer truck.

According to police, a 2014 Freightliner operated by Hasan Williams, 40,  of Tobyhanna PA, was moving thru the parking lot when the truck ran over Lavoie. Lavoie was killed instantly, police said.

This was the second time that police had been called to the paring lot in the matter of an hour. At approximately, 12:20 am, police said officers were called to the lot to investigate the report of a suspicious person in the parking lot. Officers spoke with Lavoie, who was a suspect in a Lewiston theft case from earlier in the day. Lavoie was issued a criminal summons for the Lewiston theft and for unlawful use or possession of inhalants, according to police. Police said Lavoie was released and was last seen walking towards Turner Street.

According to the Auburn police, the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Auburn Police were assisted at the scene by Maine State Police, who provided an accident reconstructionist and a trooper from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.
