Several Maine American Indian tribe representatives and MSAD 54 school board members met on April 13 to discuss the possibility of dropping 'Indians' as the school's nickname.

Barry Dana, former chief of the Penobscot nation, said that using American Indian images as logos and mascots does not honor their ancestry.

Members from the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and Micmac tribes met with the school board.

Those who support keeping the 'Indians' nickname held a silent protest outside of the school prior to the meeting.
