Long time Portland Press Herald columnist M.D. Harmon died at his home in Sanford late Wednesday afternoon after a handgun he was showing a 16 year old boy went off.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the teenager was handling the gun at the time when it went off at Harmon's home on Brunell Avenue in Sanford.

Harmon, 71, had been a conservative columnist and a steadfast defender of gun rights. He had worked for the Portland paper for 41 years, retiring 5 years ago, but still wrote a weekly column for the paper.
