With Powerball ticket sales lagging lately, officials have decided to give the game a shot in the arm. In October, Powerball will make the odds of winning the big prize harder but the odds of winner smaller prizes will be better.

The third tier prize of $10,000 will be increased to $50,000 in the hopes of making the lower tier prizes more meaningful.

The chance of winning the big money currently is at 1-in-75-million and with the change it will increase to a 1-in-292-million chance.

The odds will increase because more balls will be added. Currently there are 59 balls to choose from, that will 'increase' to 69 balls. The second field of numbers (where the Powerball is drawn from) will 'decrease' from 35 to 26 balls, increasing the odds of winning a smaller prize. If the Powerball number is hit you win a $4 prize, so they are hoping to have more small winners but fewer big winners.
