Proposal Would Extend Deadline for Wrongful Death Lawsuits
Families of murder victims and unsolved missing person cases are asking lawmakers to extend the time period for when wrongful death actions can be filed.
Ten families testifying before a legislative committee this past week included Dick Moreau, whose daughter Kimberly has been missing for nearly 30 years; Trista Reynolds, mother of missing toddler Ayla; and Jim and Cathy Napier, whose son was killed 22 years ago.
Family members told WABI-TV that the change would allow a trial in a civil court that could bring more answers. They say it's not about winning damages.
Under current statute, families have two years to bring a wrongful death action. The bill would extend the deadline to six years in homicide cases. (AP)
