News out of Washington D.C. has two U.S. Senators proposing a bipartisan plan that would increase the federal gas tax 12 cents over the next two years.

Senators Chris Murphy (D) from Connecticut and Bob Corker (R) of Tennessee unveiled the plan earlier this week that would raise the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4 cents-a-gallon diesel tax each by 12 cents over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation.

The plan also calls for offsetting the gas tax increases with other tax cuts.

The last time federal gas and diesel taxes were increased was in 1993.
