Two brothers from Richmond were arrested by the Maine State Police this morning (Nov. 17)  after their speeding car was pulled over on Interstate 295 in Falmouth.

As the VW Beatle being driven by the suspects was pulling over, Trooper Justin Cooley said he saw items being thrown from the car and several other police officers then responded to the scene to conduct a search along the busy road, said Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland

Robert Gilley, 39, of Richmond and his brother,Christopher Gilley, 31., also of Richmond were arrested by troopers at the scene, McCausland said.

According to McCausland, Christopher Gilley was currently out on bail for on heroin and cocaine charges, and he was rearrested after flunking a urine test for drugs. Robert Gilley was charged with operating after suspension of his driver’s license, added McCausland.

Troopers found two hypodermic needles and some marijuana in the car, according to McCausland. A State Police dog located a crack cocaine pipe, suspected of being thrown from the Gilley’s car in the median of the road. Both men were taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

Trooper Cooley said he initially had stopped the car after clocking it at 87 mph. In addition to other troopers searching the area, the Maine Warden Service and Falmouth Police also assisted at the scene.
