In the pantheon of odd cinematic fathers and sons, you don’t get much stranger than Robert De Niro and Shia LaBeouf. Although it’s difficult to imagine the two of them sharing any DNA, they’re both attached to star in ‘Spy’s Kid,’ which will tell the true story of a traitorous spy who used his son to continue his espionage from behind bars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two stars will be working under the direction of DJ Caruso, who previously directed LaBeouf in ‘Disturbia’ and ‘Eagle Eye.’ However, they also point out that there is no script yet (and no writer attached) and both actors’ involvement is dependent on whether or not they’re pleased with the writing. So while Team De Niro/LaBeouf/Caruso may be a possibility, it’s also the kind of thing that could change in the blink of an eye.

‘Spy’s Kid’ (which desperately needs a new title that doesn’t suck) will be based on a series of The Oregonian articles by Bryan Denson, who told the story of Jim Nicholson, a CIA veteran who went to prison for selling secrets but continued to do his dirty work from prison by using his disillusioned son as a contact and courier. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it: “…Nathan traveled the world selling secrets to the Russians, all the while getting deeper and deeper over his head.”

Once you remove the awful title, this sounds like a potentially fascinating film. However, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘Argo’ have the bar awfully high for espionage movies recently, so Caruso, his actors and whatever screenwriter gets hired are going to have to step up their game in a big way. We’ll keep you posted.
