You may not know this but Roller Derby is alive and well in Maine. It has taken years but Maine Roller Derby Director Bobbi Brewer says it is thriving.

There are three Maine Roller Derby leagues in Portland alone and seven more operating around the state. As Roller Derby continues to spread around the state they hope junior roller derby will be the next step. One problem they are running into though is the search for a permanent home. Fund raising for a location and a long standing Maine law are a couple of problems the MRD faces.

A decades-old piece of legislation has apparently been making skaters outlaws for quite some time now.

The law prohibits rollerskaters from deliberately colliding with one another, and by extension prohibits the sort of contact roller derby competitors make with each other as part of their regular play. In fact, a similar statute affects ice hockey, as well.

The rollerskating law is from the 1990’s and is outdated. The Maine Legislature is working on amending the law but the MRD just has to wait for the process to work.
