The sequestration date of March 1st is just a week away with no signs from Washington of a deal being made. If no deal is reached that would mean $85 billion in automatic spending cuts. According to the Bangor Daily News, BIW President Jeffrey Geiger said in a press conference on Thursday, 'That hundreds of employees could be affected in the next six to nine months if the U.S.Senate fails to avert automatic spending cuts set to take place March 1.'

U.S.Senators Angus King and Susan Collins joined Geiger at the news conference and they also toured the shipyard and visited the DDG-1000 Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer that is under construction at the shipyard.

The Senators expressed their frustration with the failure of the Congress to pass a defense appropriations bill and what the mandated cuts would mean for the shipyards future.
