The Maine Coast Guard maintains about 100 large buoys along Maine's coast and some are...disappearing.

The buoys, along the rocky inlets and foggy harbors of Maine use heavy brass gongs and bells to guide mariners to port in bad weather.

Over the past seven gongs and bells have been stolen from eight of the buoys and have the Coast Guard baffled. It would take special tools, considerable navigational skills and big cahoonas.

According to bostonglobe.com the skill of stealing these this without a sound has them scratching their heads.
