Study after study has told us how bad it is to spend our workdays sitting. New research indicates 'standing' may be just as bad. Plant workers, who stand at least 75% of the day, were studied.

Researchers in Michigan and Switzerland studied adults standing for 5 hours at a time. They gave them a 30 minute lunch break and 5 minute seated breaks during the study. Results found short-term issue like leg cramps, fatigue and backaches.

The study showed significant fatigue after standing at work despite age or gender. Researcher Maria Gabriela Garcia, who says that the results suggest jobs that require extended periods of standing could "contribute to musculoskeletal disorders and back pain."

They don’t suggest how combat the pains of standing for long periods of time though.
