‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Will Go IMAX, Because Of Course It Will

Star Wars Episode 7 IMAX

Forget about 3D. IMAX is the thing that movie studios are going to use to get a few more bucks per movie ticket from you. It should come as no surprise that Disney, who has never been afraid of finding new ways to make money, is planning to release the hotly anticipated ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ in this massive format. So are you prepared to pay a little extra to journey to a galaxy far, far away on the biggest screen possible?

In addition, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Maleficent,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and other 2015 releases as ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ and ‘Tomorrowland‘ will also get the IMAX treatment, but let’s get real for a second: Disney was never not going to put a massive tentpole like this out in IMAX. Let’s get even more real for an additional second: unlike 3D, IMAX is almost always worth the extra surcharge, delivering an experience that simply cannot be replicated at home or in any other theater. Yes, this is yet another example of us pulling a, “Shut up and take our money!”

The real question now is whether or not director J.J. Abrams will film portions of ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ with actual IMAX cameras, like he did with ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ IMAX CEO Richard Gelford had this to say during a recent investors call: ”We are talking to J.J. Abrams test now about the next ‘Star Wars’ being used with partly IMAX cameras.”

So, yeah, he’s considering it. And he should! IMAX cinematography may be difficult to pull off and not always worth it (like in, uh, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’), but when it’s used in the right material (‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,’ for example) it can be spellbinding. Films like ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ became buzzworthy because of their use of the format, which lent their action scenes a truly unprecedented scope.

‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ will open on December 18, 2015.
