The browntail moth cocoons can be found throughout the state of Maine.

These caterpillars have toxic hair that can irritate the skin and cause a rash. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry says residents will have little impact in reducing the pest’s population by cleaning cocoons. Even the cocoons have to handles with care as you can get a rash for them too.

According to timesrecord.com the best time to clean out the cocoons is to target the browntail moth larvae in winter and spring.
