Still No Sign of Missing Appalachian Trail Hiker

Searchers once again returned to Redington TWP, trying to find evidence of what happened to hiker Geraldine Largay. She’s been missing for nearly a year.

Maine Game Wardens, State Police, U.S. Border Patrol agents, and searchers from the Maine Association of Search and Rescue were in Redington TWP Tuesday, June 17th, and continued the search for Largay. The 66-year-old from Brentwood, Tennessee also goes by the name ‘Inchworm.’

Wardens say Largay disappeared while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Maine in July of last year. She was last seen early on the morning of Monday, July 22nd at Poplar Lean-To, after spending the night with some other hikers. Geraldine was planning on hiking to Spaulding Lean-To approximately eight miles to the north, but she never arrived.

Tuesday’s search focused on areas that had not been searched and went back over areas that had, including some very difficult terrain requiring additional search efforts. But, as with last year’s searches, this one netted no clues as to Largay’s fate.

A $15,000 reward has been offered to anyone who can provide information to investigators that will locate Geraldine Largay. No date has been set for future searches.

Anyone who has any information that can lead to the location of Largay or if anyone has information about other hikers or persons in the area of Poplar Lean-To or the Oberton Stream area on the Appalachian Trail last year on July 22nd, 2013, they’re asked to share that information with the Maine Warden Service by calling (207) 624-7076.

Tuesday’s search included MASAR teams from Mahoosic SAR and Franklin County SAR.
