There's still a few weeks of summer left.  That means there's still a few more opportunities to take the family on summer road trip!  How about exploring an abandoned castle?

According to Only In Your State, there's an abandoned castle at Cape Elizabeth's Fort Williams Park!

Most people making the trip to Fort Williams are there to see the lighthouse, to take advantaged of the rolling fields, or to hang out on the small beach.  But, the park offers another attraction: an abandoned castle!  No, seriously!

The Goddard Mansion was built in the mid-1800s by John Goddard, a Portland businessman who also served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War.  In 1898, the US Army took possession of the building and used it as quarters and a club for the non-commissioned officers.

While it is now fenced off, you can still see the structure's amazing stonework,

The Goddard Mansion, and the rest of Fort Williams, is a drive of just about an hour from most of Central Maine.
