Winslow coaching icon Harold ‘Tank’ Violette passed away Tuesday. The Maine Sports Hall of Fame inductee, coached hockey and football at Winslow High School and was also the school’s athletic director. He was 77. Nick Mazurek of Rockland has the first-day lead in the Maine Junior Amateur Championship at Toddy Brook Golf Course in North Yarmouth.

Sam Moore has been named the new varsity ice hockey coach at Gardiner. He was a member of two Class B state title teams at Gardiner in the 80's. The Woman's Maine Junior Amateur Championship gets underway Wed. at Toddy Brook in North Yarmouth. Boston Red Sox: were pounded by the NY Yankees, 13-3.

American Legion: Post 51 of Oakland won then Zone 1 Championship with a 4-3 victory over Coffee News of Bangor. The Augusta 15 and under Babe Ruth team beat Cranston, R.I., 2-1 in Connecticut. That advanced them to the single elimination semifinals. Their first game is Monday. Boston Red Sox: routed the Detroit Tigers 11-1.

Nine local high school field hockey teams will take part in the 5th annual Battle for Breast Cancer Tournament at Thomas College Saturday. It's a benefit for the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, featuring High School Senior All-Star football players, is Saturday in Biddeford. Kick-off is at 6:00pm.
