Hostess Brands Have All Been Sold

The final brands of Hostess have been sold after a U.S.Bankruptcy Court judge in New York approved two deals. McKee Foods, who make Little Debbie snack cakes, is buying the Drakes Cakes for $27.5 million dollars. That means Devil Dogs, Ring Dings, Yankee Doodles are coming back!

Hostess filed for bankruptcy in January 2012 and this past November they shut down all of their operations. Including the Biddeford plant which employed 400 people. There is potential good news for those workers, Flowers Foods Inc., a Georgia based company, placed a bid of $360 million for five of Hostess' bread brands, including Wonder and Nature's Pride. The bid also included 38 warehouses and 20 bakeries.

McKee Foods Corp. is offering up to 30 million dollars for Hostess Brands Inc.'s Drake's brand, which makes Devil Dogs, Ring Dings and Yodels. McKee Foods is the maker of Little Debbie snack cakes. Hostess filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2012.

Biddeford Hostess Plant May Reopen With New Owners

Flowers Foods, based in Thomasville, Georgia, has signed an agreement to aquire several of Hostess' food brands and bakeries, including the bakery in Biddeford. The Biddeford Hostess plant had employed nearly 600 people. Hostess had filed for bankruptcy in January 2012 and in November closed for good.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Hostess brands Inc. could be announcing as early next week that Flowers Foods and Bimbo are in discussions to acquire the Hostess bread brands, which include Wonder Bread and Nature's Pride.

The news earlier this week that Hostess Brands, Inc. was closing and all of it's 18,500 workers would be losing their jobs was certainly bad news. Many Americans rushed to buy the last of the Twinkies, Suzy Q's and Ding Dongs off of store shelves. It looked like a part of Americana was fading into our past.

Biddeford, Maine’s hostess plant is part of the nationwide strike by it’s bakers union. The strike has lead to three permanent closings of it’s bakeries.
