Friday's rain could be followed by ice storm causing colder temperatures

This winter has been brutal. In Maine, we've had an ice storm with many losing power for days, we've had about double the amount of average snowfall and we've had historic cold weather. Maine isn't alone, record cold is gripping the midwest, northeast, and even the deep south.

With the number of homes in central Maine without power still on the rise, many emergency and warming shelters are opening up to those without power.

It might not quite be the 'Ice Storm of '98', but the 'Ice Storm of '13' is certainly causes plenty of problems in Central Maine. As of 4 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, Central Maine Power is reporting almost 78,000 customers without power and Kennebec County being hit the hardest. In Kennebec Country, CMP has 69,124 customers and 32,869 are without electricity as of 4 a.m.

With some areas of Maine experiencing freezing rain off and on since Saturday afternoon, power outages in Maine have been occurring and are likely to increase throughout the day with more ice on the way. Here's the latest power outage numbers from Central Maine Power Co.

CMP gets big credit from me on ice storm related stuff. They learned many lessons in the Ice Storm of 98. As of about 3am Dec 23,  CMP was reporting a total of 226 outages in their total service area. CMP does a great job of letting us know where the outages are. We're expecting an extended period of mixed precipitation throughout the weekend and with the temperatures below freezing we will likely be hit with extensive power outages.
