Bath Iron Works will lay off 30 employees. However, the company says the cuts are not related to the recent loss of a $10.5 billion contract with the Coast Guard.
UPM-Madison’s paper mill will be laying off some hourly workers. This is part of a cutback announced, as they plan to reduce production of paper for catalogs and brochures for two weeks, Jan. 24 to “on or about” the week of Feb. 9.
NewPage announced yesterday that it would shut down a paper machine at the mill in Rumford in mid-February due to tough economic times. The mill employees 830 people and about 120 workers are expected to be laid off.

The makers of Jim Beam bourbon announced that it will shut down production at its Lewiston facility and shift that work to a facility in Kentucky. 160 people work in the Beam’s plant in Lewiston that makes Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack Rum.
