This winter has been brutal. In Maine, we've had an ice storm with many losing power for days, we've had about double the amount of average snowfall and we've had historic cold weather. Maine isn't alone, record cold is gripping the midwest, northeast, and even the deep south.

It was a storm that moved right along and dump a various type of precipitation across the state yesterday afternoon and into the night. There was rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow and the snowfall totals across the state varied greatly. Here's some snowfall totals across Maine.

Just after CMP and work crews from out of state have restored the vast majority of power to the over 123,000 customers that had lost it to the ice storm last weekend, more heavy, wet snow is heading towards Maine.

As we get ready for a major winter storm, with predictions of some areas getting up to two feet of snow and wind gusts over 50 mph, let's look back and compare what happened 35 years ago this week. It became known as the 'Blizzard of '78.'
