There’s a 95 foot tall tree located in woodlands in Hebron, Maine that is believed to be the tallest American chestnut tree from Maine to Mississippi. A Maine forester has measured the tree and officials with the American Chestnut Foundation say it is thought to be the tallest. The tree is on the property of Ann Siekman, she and her husband thought they had a tall chestnut but not tallest on the East coast.

Chestnuts used to grow to 100 feet and measure 5 feet across until a blight hit in the first half of the 1900’s and nearly wiped out the chestnut tree by the 1950’s. Until now most chestnut tress seen by the Foundation are in the 70 to maybe 80 feet range. The tree in Hebron has been known about for years but it wasn’t until recently it was measured.
