Taylor Swift Is One of the Most Dangerous Celebrities… To Search for Online

Have you ever typed your favorite celeb’s name into Google, only to find a bunch of bogus links created by computer hackers? It’s likely. The next time you search for Taylor Swift online, beware! A recent McAfee Most Dangerous Celebrities study named her the 15th most dangerous celebrity to search for on the internet.

Here’s what happens: Cyber criminals use the names of popular celebrities to trick people into visiting sites that are filled with computer viruses and other scary cyber stuff. Just by looking for new video clips or articles about your favorite entertainers, you’re at risk of accidentally downloading viruses and malware onto your computer.

The study also showed that searching for female celebrities online is far more dangerous than searching for male stars. ‘Harry Potter’ actress Emma Watson, Swift’s pal Selena Gomez and Jessica Biel all topped the list. Plus, in 2012, searching for a celeb’s name with the words “free downloads” and “nude pictures” turned up the highest number of risky websites. But why would you search for those, anyway?

Luckily, McAfee provided a few tips for keeping your computer virus-free. For starters, make sure that all of the security features on your machine are up to date. Be careful of downloading free videos — especially if you are prompted to download anything before watching the content. Stick to trusted sites like Hulu, YouTube, ABC or NBC if you’re searching for clips of Taylor Swift.

With ‘Red’ hitting shelves in October and ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ owning the charts, searches for Swift’s name are definitely on the rise. Proceed with caution!
