Taylor Swift Sells More Than a Million Albums in a Week for the Second Time

As predicted by many industry insiders, Taylor Swift has accomplished what no other female artist in SoundScan history has been able to do — sell more than one million copies of an album in a 7-day period… twice. The ‘Begin Again’ singer claims her biggest career milestone after scanning a staggering 1,208,000 copies of ‘Red,’ her highly-praised fourth studio album.

The generous 16-track collection exceeds Swift’s personal one-week best set by ‘Speak Now’ in 2010, which sold 1,047,000 copies in a single sales week. Even more impressive is that ‘Red’ is now the second largest opening by a female artist ever, selling just shy of Britney Spears’ 1.3 million opening with ‘Oops … I Did It Again’ in 2000.

She wrote on Twitter:

And in all fairness to the country superstar, Swift was able to shift record-breaking numbers without the help of deep discounting in an era of declining album sales and a reliance on singles sales.

“I think for me, this album is so interesting because it’s difficult to pick a song that’s closest to me,” Swift tells Taste of Country exclusively. “Every one of these songs is a snapshot of a very different time in my life, you know?”

“You go track-by-track, and this one’s about extreme sadness, and this one’s about extreme frustration, and this one’s about hope! [laughs]” says the singer-songwriter. “And this one’s about, you know, seeing someone and falling in love for the first time.”

The accomplished lyricist had a hand in penning each of the album’s tracks, nine of which Swift wrote solo.

Swift easily tops Billboard’s all-genre Top 200 albums chart this week — the third consecutive time she has done so since her 2008 breakthrough album, ‘Fearless.’ The current project’s lead single, ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,’ earned Swift her first No. 1 on Billboard’s all-inclusive Hot 100 singles chart, and is closing in on the top spot on the pop airplay chart.

Fans expecting Swift to slow down now that she has claimed the definitive title of record-breaking sales queen can think again. The hard-working superstar is prepping for another media blitz in promotion of ‘Red,’ including performances on the CMA Awards (Nov. 1) and American Music Awards (Nov. 18), as well as her hosting duties for the Grammy Nominations Concert, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn. in December.

Taylor Swift will embark on her 2013 Red Tour on March 13, 2013.
