'The November Man' very much wants to remind you that its star once played James Bond. Yes, Pierce Brosnan is back, once again playing the action hero in a spy movie. The casting seems compelling enough, and the 'November Man' trailer sees Brosnan straddling an interesting line between 007 and Liam Neeson in 'Taken,' very much looking his age but making it work for him.

Also starring Olga Kurylenko (who played a particularly forgettable Bond love interest in 'Quantum of Solace'), 'The November Man' is directed by the competent Roger Donaldson, who has built an entire career out of making entertaining but instantly forgettable movies ('The Bank Job'! 'Species'! 'The Recruit'! 'Thirteen Days'!). In fact, he made one of the quintessential watch-it-and-forget movies of the '90s, 'Dante's Peak,' which starred Pierce Brosnan. Hey, we've arrived full circle!

Anyway, the 'November Man' trailer doesn't give much for us to chew on, but it does feature a particularly grizzled Brosnan talking tough, walking away from explosions and generally looking like James Bond with a hangover and an itchy trigger finger. If Kevin Costner and Liam Neeson can do the whole "old guy kicks ass" thing, then surely a former 007 deserves a shot. Hopefully, the movie is a little more surprising than its trailer suggests.

Here's the official plot synopsis, which gives you more than the trailer does:

An ex-CIA operative is brought back in on a very personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.

'The November Man' opens on August 27.
