‘The Voice’ Blind Auditions Week 3 Recap: Blake Shelton Adds Charlie Rey, Cassadee Pope to Team
At the start of tonight’s (Sept. 25) blind audition episode of ‘The Voice,’ Blake Shelton had collected only 12 singers for his team. After three weeks of televised blind auditions, Shelton has slowly and methodically filled his team with “quiet killers” and he had four slots open. He filled two of them with Charlie Rey and Cassadee Pope.
Smog technician Charlie Rey from Long Beach, Calif. sang Michael Buble‘s poppy crooner version of ‘Home,’ as opposed to Shelton’s country version. He had a refined and buttery smooth tone, combined with a confident and cool factor, which is why Shelton and Adam Levine spun their chairs around for him. Buble is actually serving as Shelton’s team mentor this season, so low-key Rey choosing Shelton was a wise move, unbeknownst to him, and not just because Shelton cleverly said, “Come home, Charlie, come home.”
Shelton joked, “Not only did I get a great singer, but I pissed off Adam …Team Adam is beginning to crumble.” [Insert evil laugh here]. While he was definitely thrilled to have improved his team with such a quality voice, stealing him right out from under his BFF Levine’s nose was an extra, added thrill.
All four of the coaches turned their chairs around for Cassadee Pope, who was in a band called Hey Monday and is now attempting a solo career. She had loads of style, with her tattoos and multi-colored hair, and her sexy vibrato voice when singing Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn.’
Shelton’s pitch to join his team was simple; he told her he believed with 200 percent of his heart that she is a superstar. While Aguilera and Levine vied over her loudly, she said she had to go with her heart and chose Shelton. He was beyond stoked to win over Levine — again — and the rest of the judges were visibly disappointed that she didn’t choose them.
Her Wikipedia page says her middle name is Blake, so it was fate on another level.
Score one — make that two, since he added two team members — for Team Blake.
So Shelton expanded his team to 14 singers, and he now has two slots to fill in order to get Team Blake up and running, and off to the races.
