The town of Oakland has now adopted an ordinance to prohibit the retail sale of marijuana and the establishment of marijuana social clubs. According to centralmaine.com this does not prohibit the legal use and the legal cultivation of marijuana as approved by Maine voters in the Nov. 8 marijuana referendum.

LIHEAP is looking for older Mainers. The Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps people pay for heat.  According to the Sun Journal officials say too few applicants are elderly. Maine is a cold state with oldest population in the country. This is concerning officials and they are encouraging seniors to apply.

Waterville police are investigating a burglary and two attempted burglaries that happened Tuesday night at three churches. According to centralmaine.com Pleasant Street United Methodist Church was broken into Tuesday night, First Baptist Church on Park Street and the St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church on Appleton Street had attempted break-ins.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Waterville PD.

The Falmouth Police Department is warning Mainers about a scary new scam which threatens the you with violence or death if they don’t pay. In this case they instructed the victim to wire the money to a person in  Istanbul, Turkey. According to WGME police say this is a scam. Do not pay on this scammer. Please notify your local law enforcement agency if you receive such a text or e-mail message.

Some of Maine's lakes and ponds are icing over BUT not all of them are safe to be on. The Maine Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Facebook page is urging folks to use caution before heading out on the ice.

The most powerful nor'easter since 2014 is poised to move into northern New England. A winter storm warning has been posted for much of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont for Thursday and Friday. Officials say the barometric pressure associated with the storm is projected to be the lowest since the Valentine's Day storm in 2014.

The Maine Governor's Energy Office says the price of heating oil has risen over the last two weeks. The statewide average cash price for No. 2 heating oil was $2.22 per gallon this week. That's up eight pennies over the last two weeks. The state's average prices for kerosene and propane also increased.

The Dixfield PD has been shut down. This comes after the Police Chief and patrol officer were placed on paid administrative leave. The two were the department's only full-time officers in the town of about 2,500. The city manager declined to discuss the nature of the "personnel issue." The Oxford County Sheriff's Department is providing coverage for the town.

Campaign finance records show that GOP Gov. Paul LePage forked over a couple hundred bucks to an effort to defeat Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. LePage chipped in a total $300 to the Stop Hillary Political Action Committee from mid-October until mid-November. The governor hasn't kept his dislike of Clinton and her husband a secret.

A push is on to save one of the rarest domestic pig breeds in the country, the mulefoot hog. A Maine farmer is helping lead the charge by convincing consumers to eat them. The hog was once the rarest of all U.S. livestock breeds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving Sue Frank $50,000 to help increase interest in products made with mulefoot meat.

Police in Presque Isle, Maine, are warning of a possible bad batch of heroin after five overdoses, one of them fatal ,within a four-hour period. The overdoses on Tuesday in the city of 9,600 residents in northern Maine served to bring the state's epidemic of heroin and Fentanyl abuse into sharper focus.

Actress Debbie Reynolds has died at the age of 84. Reynolds died one day after the death of her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher. Reynolds' son Todd Fisher says the stress of his sister Carrie's death "was too much" for their mother. Todd Fisher says his mother said, "I want to be with Carrie."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is firing back at U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who tore into Israel for settlement-building on land claimed by the Palestinians. Kerry accused Netanyahu of dragging Israel away from democracy and forcefully rejecting the notion that America had abandoned Israel with a controversial U.N. vote that condemned Israel's actions. Netanyahu says, "Israelis do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders."

Police in the Philippines say gunmen have shot dead seven people in what they suspect is a feud involving illegal drugs. The victims include three teens and a pregnant woman. Police say one of four suspects in the shooting has been arrested, after being identified by a survivor of the attack in Caloocan city.

The New York Police Department is allowing Sikh (seek) officers to wear turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long for religious reasons. Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced the new rules Wednesday, following a graduation ceremony for new police recruits. Officers must first get approval and the turbans must be navy blue and have the NYPD insignia attached. O'Neil says there are about 160 officers who practice the Sikh religion.
