The public comment period is over for a federal review of more than two dozen national monuments, including Maine's new monument in the Katahdin region. President Donald Trump ordered Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to conduct the review of monuments. Among the monuments Trump wants to review is Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, which President Barack Obama designed as a monument last summer.
The Louisiana-based bottler of Fireball liquor is fighting against the Republican governor's proposed ban on in-state sales of tiny alcohol bottles. The company Sazerac calls the proposed ban politically motivated, anti-business and unsupported by relevant evidence. Maine's Democratic attorney general says she will run next year to replace a Republican governor with whom she has often clashed. Janet Mills announced her 2018 gubernatorial run Monday in a prepared statement. Other announced candidates in the race include LePage's former health and human services commissioner Republican Mary Mayhew.
A new report says the man who set up a meeting last year for a Russian lawyer to give Donald Trump Jr. potentially damaging material about Hillary Clinton indicated in an email to Trump Jr. that the Russian government was the source of the information. The New York Times report Monday cited three unnamed people with knowledge of the email from music publicist Rob Goldstone.
Officials say 16 people died in a Marine Corps plane crash in rural Mississippi. Leflore County Emergency Management Director Fred Randle told local media late Monday that 16 bodies were recovered after the KC-130 refueling tanker spiraled to the ground into a soybean field. The Marine Corps says it operated the plane but hasn't said where the flight began or where it was going.
